Welcome to the main website for Mandan's Latin program! On this site you can find information about each class, assignment lists, and various handouts. Also, you can find various websites and resources to help you foster your Latin knowledge.
As approximately 70% of all English words can be traced back to Latin roots, studying this language opens up an array of possibilities. Latin, having been used around the world for over 2500 years, is important for studies in scientific research, medicine, literature, philosophy, religious studies, architecture, theater, music, linguistics, and philology. Since English, especially more advanced English, is so highly derived from Latin, studying Latin also often increases knowledge and appreciation for English, which tends to lead to better results on related sections on standardized tests, like the SAT or ACT. Like any language, Latin requires students to be prepared to daily review vocabulary and grammatical elements while learning new concepts if success is desired. Studying Latin will also offer an insight into the history and culture of Ancient Rome, and how our modern culture has been heavily influenced by Rome, which students will also be expected to learn. |

A native of Bismarck, I finished my undergraduate at Concordia College in Moorhead with a degree in Classics and Religion.
I then taught English in Ukraine through the Peace Corps for almost 3 years, eventually returning to receive teaching licenses in both Latin and English as a second language while completing my Master's in education. I currently also spend some time a week serving as a Sylvan tutor in Bismarck, giving assistance with reading, writing, math, ACT preparation, study skills, and a variety of other programs. |
